Dan Blaax prides himself on his versatility, for whatever the occasion.
Dan Blaax’s musical story started in Bedford, UK as a 5 year with an early passion for music. At this time the instrument of choice was the Classical guitar. Even from this young age Dan enjoyed a variety of musical styles and instruments. This resulted in beginning his lessons in recorder playing.
Dan’s saxophone story began, when at the age of 8, the radio was playing over the PA system of the school summer fete. This would be a defining seed, planted in a young mind, totally oblivious to what would follow.
A year later the smooth sound of the saxophone was playing on a radio. 9 year old Dan was not going to miss THIS opportunity to find out what the sound was. After confirming with a number of confused adults, he finally knew…. It was the SAXOPHONE!
Now, knowing the name of this magical instrument and given the opportunity to take lessons at school, Dan started the journey towards becoming the performer we now know as DAN BLAAX!
Dan’s early career consisted of performing in many orchestras and wedding bands, but like many musicians, decided to get a “real job,” after completing his Masters Degree in Business and Management. So a soulless career in property management materialised.
2.5 years passed and Dan’s saxophone case had literally gathered dust in the corner of his bedroom. The heartbreaking reality was, that Dan’s identity as a saxophonist, no more…
A friend’s wedding in New Jersey (USA) and a scheduling mistake, resulted in an impromptu trip to New York and a trip up the Empire State building resulted in a massive turn-around of fortunes. The small group were excited as they exited the elevator at the top, but were told that it was raining, with possible lightning. The disappointment swiftly ended as the sky magically cleared and they were welcomed to the immense New York skyline, with a DOUBLE RAINBOW! In that moment, he turned to a long-time school friend and blurted out, “I need to play the saxophone again.”
That evening and many steps later, the group found themselves walking through Times Square and greeted with the sound of a saxophone. It was a gentleman by the name of “Sweet Lou” who was kind/ crazy enough to let a stranger (Dan) use his beautiful saxophone.
Years past, with MANY hours of practice and rehearsals to be had. Dan was back in the game!
Session playing, weddings, pub gigs, funerals, TV commercials, the lot! Anything to get the skills back.
It reached a point where the day job and his growing demand as a special evens and nightclub saxophonist forced Dan to decide which direction his life was going to take? Call it good fortune, call it fate, or the universe; a 5-month, full-time sax position arose in the French Alps entertaining international crowds at Dick’s Tea Bar and La Folie Douce. This 5 months catapulted Dan Blaax’s career to a whole new level. International clients started booking Dan for weddings and events all over the world.
Fast forward to the present day. Dan enjoys performing for weddings and events mainly for clients from the UK and Dubai. While weddings would be considered Dan’s specialty, he is often requested to work his magic for TV performances, corporate activations, festivals and nightclubs around the world.
